Contracting and Master/Power Limited Electrician of Record Requirements

A contract, agreement, or undertaking with another person for the installation of electrical wiring or power limited wiring or the installation of electrical or power limited system parts of other apparatus may not be entered by anyone other than a master electrician or power limited electrician.  A class B electrician may not enter a contract, undertaking, or agreement for the installation of electrical wiring except for; farmstead electrical wiring or residential electrical wiring in one or two family dwellings located in a city with a population of two thousand five hundred or fewer.

A master, class B, or power limited electrician may exercise that individual's privileges as a licensed master, class B, or power limited electrician for no more than one shop or business, and shall comply with provisions as required for contracting with the Secretary of State’s office as stated in North Dakota Century Code chapter 43-07.

A master of record is an individual responsible to adhere to all laws and rules of the North Dakota wiring standards for the partnership, company, corporation, limited liability company, or association and has shown proof of liability insurance that the master of record is covered by the organization. The master of record is not allowed to work on other property other than property owned or leased by the organization.

Non-Contracting Requirements

A noncontracting master is an individual responsible to adhere to all laws and rules of the North Dakota wiring standards and has the same responsibility as a journeyman electrician. Electrical work shall be done under the supervision of a contracting master or master of record.

License Status Guidelines for Master/Class B/Power Limited Electrician

Upon becoming a master, class B, or power limited electrician (through exam, reciprocity or status change), choose one option from the three license statuses (categories) listed below:

  1. Contracting Master, Contracting Class B or Contracting Power Limited Electrician
  2. Master of Record or Power Limited Electrician of Record
  3. Non-Contracting Master or Non-Contracting Power Limited Electrician  

If option 1 or option 2 is selected, follow the steps listed below.

  1. Contact North Dakota Secretary of State (701-328-2900) and file any proper paperwork which includes registration of business and licensure of business as a contractor.
  2. Once you have received your official business registration and business contractor license, complete and submit the following documents to the NDSEB:
    - Downloable/Fillable Form - Application for Electrical Contracting
    - Downloadble/Fillable Form - E-Cert Application
    - Certificate of Liability Insurance - Policy limits of at least five hundred thousand dollars
  3. Upon receipt of required documents, contractor orientation will commence, which will include an administrative rule session and telephonic information session. Participants include the contracting/of record electrician and, if applicable, the owner or its representative of the business (the person that signs the Application for Electrical Contracting). The orientation provides valuable information and to help understand what the NDSEB expects.
  4. $50.00 License Fee (Master/Power Limited) or $40.00 License Fee (Class B).  Only applicable if a new license is being issued.

If option 3 is selected, follow the steps listed below.  

  1. Complete and submit downloadable/fillable form - Application for Non-Contracting Master or Power Limited Electrician 
  2. $50.00 License Fee (Master/Power Limited)  Only applicable if a new license is being issued.
